A few notes:
- I don't have any real sense of the narrator as a character. The details that emerge seem pretty non-descript. I would be interested to see what someone, across multiple incarnations would feel is worthy of note.
- For a story that spans multiple lifetimes or at least snippets of lifetimes, there's just not a lot to go on. No sense of what sort of life they led after being aware of their reincarnation for the zillionth time. It's just sort of matter-of-fact about the whole thing. Maybe this is true to the character but it's not particularly interesting to read.
- Having the narrator spell out the moral of the story is a bit annoying. It worked for EC Comics and the Twilight Zone, but in both cases it was part of the format and also the Twilight Zone went off the air over sixty years ago.

This as where I really felt the piece could be improved. The length is a little short for the magnitude of idea combined with the formatting and style you are trying out. This! The world was on fire and in ruin. How so? Tell me more. How do they know it is the whole world? Was it like in a picture where all you can see for miles is fire, endless fire reaching up to the horizon, everything within obliterated by the flickering and magnificent and terrible flames? Was the heat, even at whatever distance, so hot it almost blinded, drying the face and hurting the nostrils and feeling when they opened their moth like that one time they tried smoking cigarettes but now the whole planet was soot and smoke and hot ash? I want to know.

i think the rhyme and meter are solid and i like some of the imagery a lot. it's also really fun to see something written by someone in-universe, and a soothsayer of the serpents' hand is a fun conceit for sure. the issue that i have is that the poem is really, for lack of a better way of saying it, overt and obvious. statements about long-established interpretations of specific tarot cards are not giving much beyond what people have already read and thought about their symbolism and it ultimately ends up being sort of disjointed from the very direct moral at the end of "live in the now" which, while it is an important philosophical concern, is not approached here with freshness or subtlety. that said the bones are good and i think you could rewrite or rework it and improve it quite a bit! it isn't that it's really bad, just that i think it has a lot of room to shine with some polish.

I have written before about how I do not think critique expressing wishes for what the work could have been when it is not that thing whatsoever (e.g., a work named "hamlet" that is not hamlet downvoted to oblivion because it is not hamlet) is unproductive. However, I wish this work had spent more time on the ideas at the start of the work, discussing how it is for people in a true Modern Asylum (psychiatric ward) and how new rules govern their lives and how they may experience the world so differently from everyone else but must be quiet and pretend to be treated as human. And then the work made a turn to talk about Jailors and Bookburners and so on and I felt tired. Such an interesting, compelling, powerful concept and then not explored. A waste! King salmon, a healthy size and ready to mate, left gasping on the riverbed, fisherman's boots still nearby and Jeep's tyretracks fleeing the scene, for too good of a fish had been caught that day and they did not know to throw it back. Alas, but I am sad.

Addendum: Because neither idea was explored to fruition, neither of them were very compelling to me. Loved how half the story was inside the footnotes, though. Genuinely.

I'm on a very similar path of thinking to Styg, but am ultimately more conflicted. I personally wouldn't mind the mention of scpverse lore, but you don't exposit on it at all and ultimately this is a piece that would be unchanged if you removed mention of them.

However, I think everything that is here is nicely made. The tone is very strong. So while I don't feel comfortable upvoting because you really could expand this to a more complete work, it's not like anything here is bad. So I'll be novoting. If you end up adding more to the piece please let me know, I'd love to give it another shot

The significance of the Jailors or Bookburners to this piece is not apparent to me, maybe because I'm not well-versed in SCP lore and groups of intrigue. I like the comparison of the "Modern Asylum" being akin to "Red" and other qualities of experience which can't be explained and can only be perceived—but I struggle to see any intriguing descriptions beyond that, so the concept is lost on me. The footnotes add little, if not completely insubstantial.

wowzers this is cool- a majorly format-screwy piece of prose. there's so much meat to it and so much to enjoy. it leaves a ton of open questions and demands more reads than i have given it, yet. the way the two columns interact and form points of fixation back and forth, with the externality and internality duking it out on a big ball, and the way it explodes into the middle section, ugh, yess. and it cascades into madness from there until the end. really enjoyable and interesting and creative

really excellent short story. it's very well written and tackles the prompt head on in an interesting and sensitive way. it's relatable to me in different ways when i reflect on different points in my life which is a special sort of thing on its face. obviously a very high effort and poetic chunk of prose. well done

what a neat piece of analog dinosaur art! super cool. i especially like the grained out interlaced-esque effect; i think it's pretty convincing across this image in particular. i'm guessing this was a photoshop smart filter mosaic but whatever parameters the artist chose are really well dialed in. awesome

an illustration of one of plilt's creature concepts. so fun! i love the dynamic poses of the cats and the way it places them in the landscape, which is really lovely. additionally i like that it captures some of the specific physiological details in the description of the creatures. great fun

a beautiful collaborative trifecta: a stunning theme for one of my favorite canons (maybe my favorite?), a wonderful piece of art, and integrated into that art a really gorgeous poem. the poem is fabulous: it says so much with so little and is seemingly purpose built to be a concrete poem that weaves in the art in a deliberately-formatted way, which is impressive. genuinely touched and i think it's high time i got off my rear and wrote that over root and under loam piece already

a fun, entirely-dialogue piece about a pair of invasive angel-busters. it's funny - this was one i considered trying to do as a bonus gift and i probably would have written the same combination but really differently. anyway it's fun and funny and breezy and it sure gets the job done. packs a punch in a small space. bravo

a sort of franken-poem pulling in lines from the author's own work and lines from what, half a dozen? others? from various eras to assemble this flowing, stream of consciousness verse that stealthily addresses the prompt question. a great little puzzlebox that rewards multiple readings and is basically a nesting doll composed entirely of easter eggs. quite fun

well the author definitely seems to have gone through a lot of effort to incorporate the historical fiction side of things. a neat little conspiracy-theory-styled set of letters about a really fascinating and whacked-out historical figure in correspondence with lyle burnley in his old age, looping in operation nemesis toward the end, and it's all wrapped up in…. waiting in line at the library. fun times guaranteed to be had by all in the library!

this jotw crushes. this is my favorite series on site. anyone who knows me knows i'm a huge jotw head and this one is awesome. featuring a heavy dose of ecology and fantasy-creature creation, which is really well thought out. a couple of formatting hitches but it hits the tone right on the head. it's really a great addition and i'll be glad to see it hit the collection after yule comes to a close

i'm going to be judgmental about the font this is a really awesome prose-poem-esque piece that squarely tackles the prompt in a really delicious way. it's breathless and unforgiving and it does leave you with the sense of "what the fuck" that a good old-fashioned fever dream does, where the flashes of reality and consciousness interweave and intermingle with things altogether less grounded. really nice.

a lot of really great prose here in this short story. i'll want to give it another read-through in the future but it's really well written and combines a couple of ch00's prompts in an interesting way that i don't really want to give away if you haven't read it. i have also wanted to write for this set of prompts before (i think this every time i see them!) but i would have written to different prompts in a really different way. it's neat to see someone with a style such a departure from mine. very well done, very well written

wow, this was awesome! what a ride. i loved the way it is broken up into natural sections that highlight and set off various sections of the story, provide visual interest, do a lot with what's available on wikidot, etc. a ton of great characterization and also reminding me that i need to read goddamn seed to sky finally. how have i not done that yet? wow. i have really dropped the ball. anyway this was really great, a lot of great writing and formatting for meat, not just visual tricks or what have you

molly!!!! oh my gosh. molly. look at her! she's so cute. i love all the little details - the color and patterning of her being so closely tied to the species of frog molly is in the story, the snapdragons in her hat, the way her outfit recalls depictions of other character's of snap's, the detail of the cookies — it's like she's the idealized molly that she imagines she could be internally, and also the way other people, who interact with her externally, might see her despite all her anxieties and her general feelings of inadequacy that creep in. really fun! so cute!

didion referred to this a bit in their post about the piece, but this is a super cool piece of artwork about an architect's notions of the city, and the way the layers come together to create this three-dimensionality is really awesome. i especially dig the reflections and light effects in the haze as well. the whole thing is quite vibes-oriented and i think it works really nicely in that regard. very cool scene

i mean, what is there to say about this awesome companion piece to burn like nothing? burn like nothing itself ranks very highly among my favorite pieces on site (and if you haven't read it, you should, it's sort of flawless) and this absolutely steps up to that plate. on a technical level and in its diction it's basically impeccable. does a really phenomenal job of conjuring huge, sweeping mood from very small details. it's just so precise and exacting, so detail-oriented, and it assembles into a really wondrous whole. like someone doing a lego kit made of pieces from a grainy-polaroids-only mood board. awesome

wow, this is so fun! a really fun take on the "elder god at an office job" prompt. it's quite funny and heartfelt! i think it's pretty well executed and i would love to see it posted with just a touch of polish on it. i had a smile on my face through a lot of it which is a really good sign. great job, author!
