This is a real curiosity, and I actually enjoy how contextless and off-kilter the second half feels. The denser half is attentive to the personal (memories of food, a distant countryside) and to worldbuilding (I also love the details of porcelain being closer to the soil), and it makes the change very abrupt in a way that is … delightful? It makes me very curious about the kind of person the narrator is, that this is a moral quandry the universe would present them with at all (and also seems to approve of their answer).

I think there may be a word missing in this sentence?

Anyone who is anyone will know that this means plants are harder to get their liveliness, and this means theirs at a disadvantage.

But it's followed by one of my favorites:

I pitied my onion that would die homesick.

I wish y'all had spent some more time over the talking onion bit. It moves way faster then the first half because it's dialogue. Spatially it looks the same, but there's less there. I still enjoyed the speaker's ruminations about planting, treating the floating island as a normal thing causing a problem for himself and his thoughts on his decision towards the onion, so I ended up upvoting
