The fact that speech was actually real was not something I expected, it adds so much more to this already very compelling piece. I love it, it’s so melancholy. It’s a very expected ending, but that serves it so well. They knew this could happen, the speech is prepared, they know their goodbyes, they know how to activate the nitrogen. It’s all rehearsed, and the performance goes perfectly. Big +1 from me

Ahh fuck, that was really really nice. You struck an excellent chord of melancholy by interspersing the Safire memo (deep cut!) with the meat of the story. It’s interesting because it was clear to me from the first few lines that these guys weren’t making it off the moon, and typically that kind of giveaway undercuts the pathos in a story. But for this, it elevates it - their deaths aren’t a reveal, it’s the natural arc of the story and works heartstring-tuggingly well. Very nice stuff.

I hope you enjoyed the piece! For reference, the italicized pieces are from the Safire memo (the speech Nixon would have given should Apollo 11 failed). This one is for the alternate history and space enjoyers out there!

Thanks to dr nepalwala and NotAnOligarch for crit!
