Alaska and California are two places separated not only by climate and 'aesthetics', in terms of how things, particularly the way wildlife moves and decays but also because of the passage of time. (I hope I'm making sense here, if I got your question right. If my oil fryer brain fails me: tldr: I experimented with the location title vs none and it sort of felt awkward without any.)

You take a ticket in line at the deli from the little circular kiosk. It reads 28… Not entirely sure how long it will be until you get your sirloin, you wait. The butcher is chopping away.

Number 28!

the worst "i'll crit this later' placeholder

First off, I might be a bit more biased in the positive direction on this piece, seeing as I am of course a big fan of your work. That being said, I love it. I'll try to find as much fault in it as I can, but I can tell its pretty far along yet.
Questions first:

1: yes, in a much more concrete way than usual for me. At least comparing the poetry section here to Instant Flushes, its a lot more grounded. And yes its evocative, but what you're trying to evoke is my question. For me, it wasn't really the feeling of being transitory, or of moving from one place to another. I didn't really get that. More like being stuck in the same state of mind: "smears of faint crimson beneath permafrost". That's just my interpretation though so probably prone to being different than others'.

2: Personally, I'd rather the poem at the end instead, as I think its a stronger closer. I don't really know why, but the closing line right now feels a little weak to me. Maybe that doesn't make sense for the overall travel type thing, but otherwise I would somehow beef up that ending line. Perhaps thats my own style sneaking into the crit, idk. Mess with the format a little, maybe.

But this is very good. The language is the real highlight of this one. Not much else to say, excited to see it when it comes. If you want more I could probably whip something up. But in summary: good stuff, maybe not great format.

Howdy! I'm on a bit of a crit binge tonight, it seems. If you want full transparency, I avoided critting this when it originally got sent out as your style has never been one that gelled perfectly in my mind. Not to say that I don't enjoy them, I just don't have the cognitive stability necessary to fully place the puzzle pieces together in a cohesive manner, if that makes any sense. And then I forgot it existed. Seeing as it hasn't gotten much love, I've decided to put aside my stressed thoughts as best I can, the ones that demand I give crits that are at least a hair insightful.

+ I'll try my best to be helpful.

- Quality not guaranteed. Warranty voided upon reading, so no refunds!

Upon further inspection (a measurement registering as approximately four-and-three-fifths rereads and some Google searches), I'm gonna have to bounce heavily off of your prompts. Forgive me.

1. It feels evocative, that's for sure. Lots of fuel, blood, nostalgia, and longing. A twinge of regret. The Fairbanks section especially. Of course, by my own nose and tongue, ones prone to error. The images are where I get stuck, I'm trying to connect them to the piece, but I can't seem to put two and two together. The impression I'm getting is something along the lines of "photos from an older life, one years in the past, being reminisced," fueled in part by the introduction line and date, alongside vibes I can't put to words. In terms of reorganizing, I like the metaphor (presumably) to poetry to more literal, grounded prose.

2. As mentioned above, I do like the concept of the flow of the formatting, I think there's something to be said about a disintegration from high-art metaphor to much more straight-forward, grounded in memory and imagery prose. Accessible? Maybe not as much, mostly stemming from the poetry in the middle. Now, this is a consequence of poetry being poetry to be quite frank. It isn't egregious enough that I think it warrants disassembly, but I won't lie and say I fully understood it. I'd also be a hypocrite if I said you had to make it accessible. I am a man wooed by the notion of incomprehensible art. But overall it does feel a tad jerk-y, like I'm stalling in a manual car. The way one section moves to the other isn't very smooth. While they do all have a central theme, one that I get from the first and third, it doesn't move from one to the other well with how different they are in surface material. (If that doesn't make sense, yell at me and I'll try my best to say it better if I can.)

A more general thought: I'm aware of the piece's connection to the whole "Tramp" collection, but I fall short on the location names being utilized. I'm presuming they're in reference to places visited? Maybe locations where the piece stems from in some way? This may be a shortcoming of my own mental capacity, but it does halt me in my tracks a bit when I read it.

I do like the core of the piece, but I can't say I fully get it, nor roll with the flow as a whole. The concept of the flow is intriguing, one that I actually really like, but I just don't feel it with this piece.

Of course, as I said before, this style isn't my strength, neither in reading nor writing. So to say I'm a trustworthy source is questionable, but I wanted to offer my two cents nonetheless in an effort to be helpful.

Keep up the good work, good luck!

Hi,

Draft

Migratory Snowbird has (like a couple of pieces as of late) been one of those things that took a quite some time to finish—partially due to life circumstances, but also the content turned out to be grounded hard within a rapidly unfolding reality—recent personal struggles involving identity and the abrupt and total demolition and reconstruction of any anchor to a preconceived iteration of one's self. Some parts like photographs still need to be sourced, but I'm happy with the current state to seek critique.

I don't have really anything specific for one to be on the lookout for pertaining to this piece—anything flies for me. Some rough pointer questions to get one started:

1. Is the piece evocative enough? Are there any segments that can be reworked or retrofitted? Does it deliver on theme?

2. Format? Do you think the stream 'sandwich' style is accessible/comprehensible enough? Admittingly I'm a bit on the fence about this one too.

All the best,

-lzhoudidion
