it's hard to put into words how effective this is. really excellent job. as snap mentioned, the juxtaposition of the first and second stanzas - the parallelism of things like the colors, the weather, children, the time of day. you set the stage, and then you pull the rug out from underneath us: it's about humankind and nothing else.

The syncopation of fantastical prose inundated with humane normalcy creates a stellar work. Delectable, bittersweet, a candy bitten in hjiy but soured as it passes down the throat. Delicious nonetheless.

Feels like I'm pointing out the obvious here but I do really love the two stanzas and how different they are. Fantasy and reality mushing together. The first paragraph reminds me of a video I saw recently, of an old man HOA representative yelling at children for fishing in a lake, who ended up snapping one of their fishing rods

This was just lovely. Reminiscent of The Star from Anthology 2023, but personified — it has devoured a whole person, digested them, and now what bones remain are cloaked in the dark oily fur of that which hates above all else.
