…grew up near the end of the cold war, but I've read a lot of stories like this, and it comes off to me as a bit cliche. I think you could make it work, but I would change the tone a bit. Your narrator is very matter-of-fact about objects that should be astonishing.

I wanted to suggest some other stories in this genre to give you an idea of what I mean, but I can't find them, because they are all in my paper book collection, which is hard to search. However, here is a very old one from 1937, which you may find interesting:

All these things were magic, but I touched them and lived—the magic had gone out of them. Let me tell one thing to show. In the washing-place, a thing said "Hot" but it was not hot to the touch—another thing said "Cold" but it was not cold. This must have been a strong magic but the magic was gone. I do not understand—they had ways—I wish that I knew.

I hope you see what I'm getting at. The narrator is almost worshipful of the strange objects he encounters, but the reader knows exactly what the objects are.

This article is written from the perspective of someone who is in the far future, perhaps a few generations away from us. The general premise being that (in the not too distant future) the world as we know it was decimated by a nuclear war (radiation being the explanation for the death zones).
I was binge watching those 'top 10/8/13 most mysterious' or 'most unexplained' videos on youtube, mostly because of how silly some of them are, and I got to thinking that one of those videos would be truly bizarre in the Foundation/Library universe, just because of how much more unexplained stuff there would be. However, I kind of changed gears from that, and the idea evolved into what you read just now.
