It's an excellent counter-example. but my records indicate that after the death of their chicken god, the carpet creature, having been freed from their backward religion, wholeheartedly embraced science and technology. Their first great invention was a spot remover powerful enough to remove the massive amount of chicken blood that had been spilled upon them, because seriously, that crap stains like a son of a bitch. Their second great invention was a race of sentient Roombas, and the carpet creatures and the Roombas have lived in perfect symbiosis to this day.

I would counter with the example of the carpet creatures of Tauran-VI, whom have a chicken, but it is worshipped and revered as god. Of course, until a Way was opened up there and the beings who came out from it found the chicken, slaughtered it, then left and closed the Way. Of course, we don't know what happened afterwards but nor has anyone really cared enough to find out.

Ah, yes, the well-known teleological argument for the universality of chickens, second in fame only to the well-studied Cartesian argument, cogito ergo gallus. It is difficult to counter this logic, sir, difficult indeed.

I like to think that chickens are the most popular animal for this because their morphology is the single most common across every known world.

Places without some analogue of the chicken are of course hellish landscapes on which no life could conceivably develop.

I mean, they'd have to be.
