Howdy-hey, here's my entry for Day 2 of the 2021 Scavenger Hunt! The theme is, of course, “Alien Invasion”. I borrowed my entry's URL and title from a leftover link in the 2019 Wanderers' Station contest. This is a subversion of the theme and briefly discusses a variety of concepts you might associate with otherwordly invaders. Take the title with a grain of salt, would you?

Distance breeds alienation, and can make mere existence of the Other seem an intrusion against the walls we unconsciously (and consciously) prop up. But it doesn't need to be this way.

This article was very interesting, and it read somewhat like a declaration of war in the first half or three-quarters, but at the end, they hold back, which I wasn't expecting. I suppose they would say to me, a human, that my assuming they were going to declare war is the exact reason they choose to watch. Very cool.

(Also I quite liked the bit where they listed various alien archetypes in the media and flipped them to reflect on humans, very cool x2)

Love the exploration of colonialism and othering, less a fan of the "aliens who refuse to intervene because they think humanity should sort things out on their own" trope. As if these things are purely a matter of some vague civilizational maturity rather than the product of material conditions and what ideology people have access to. And as if there is no way to help someone grow that doesn't infringe on their autonomy.

these mf aliens don’t know how to use punctuation bro

I liked it! My main concerns are largely that the language feels clunky, awkward throughout a lot of it - less verbose-poetic and more “wait, what did that say?”. But then again, you know, aliens, so I’m not holding it against the piece too hard. It meanders around a little but really gets focus in the last paragraph or two, as it’s concluding. Also a very nice subversions on the contest prompt, so overall it was a worthwhile read!
