I really love this concept, and I'm very excited to have finally fleshed it out, so I want to acknowledge a few things that inspired me for this post. First, there was a tumblr post about the relationship between bees and beekeepers that gave me the idea, and the Telling the Bees Wikipedia page also inspired me.

I'm really quite proud of this one, and it would not be as good as it is now without the extremely useful critique from goosefish and destinysday. Thank you both once again!

But for real this is a really nice story, which, despite the simplicity of the concept, has a surprising amount of depth. Great work!

This is really really good! I love the concept too it's such a cool idea. I had completely forgotten about telling the bees.

Ah fuck the last like three sentences gave me chills. This is such an simple but interesting premise; the life of through the eyes of an apicultured bee. Loved the way it is written, and the parallels of life and rebirth at the end. Just, splending all around. Prolly my fave contest piece so far.

omg it's the bee movie

No but I really liked this. I was going to come into the comments and ask wtf was going on during the grieving bit but the Wikipedia page explains that. I had no idea that was a thing, but this takes that factoid and spins it out into a genuinely engaging story. It didn't take too long for me to figure out they're bees (which I imagine is intentional) and once that settled in it was fun to watch the internal monologue of this scrappy little honeybee fighting through the winter. My heart bleeds for him. A well-written and supremely creative take on the theme.

I'm not usually too vested in stories about the lives of animals - which is funny coming from me as a Furry - but the level of observations being transformed into prose is remarkable. It reminds me of Jack London a bit, although this story humanizes the animals more than he used to.

The thought of being reborn in the hive is almost obvious, but the conclusion of that bee, that their god has been reborn, while it's simply a younger generation of humans taking over the bee farm, is such an abt way of reasoning for a bee, it fascinates me. That they would regard us as gods is charming, however unlikely.

A good little tale.
