Just a bridge

My first page here is out! And for a contest, no less.

I spent pretty much the entire writing period wondering what I was going to do with my assigned image (The image is this by the way, released in the public domain and submitted for the contest by fairydoctor, thank you verily) — I kept thinking of ways to use it as a setting, before eventually landing on the idea of making the story about the bridge itself.

I'd gone through a few tough days while writing this, so much of that bled into the overall feel. I hope you all have fun reading this!

Oh man that was so good. I loved the start, with this character wondering what the bridge is all about, to then turning to bitter stories, revealing the bridge to be the central piece in a more literal way than expected. Such a fun journey that ends just as it started; with just a bridge.

Bridge
The themes in this are really powerful and well-presented, and the element of gallows humour adds to the dark atmosphere as well as reflecting how ridiculous it is to be human sometimes. This is also a really inventive use of the image, so well done. I really liked this one. +1 for sad bridge

Damn. That was really good, liked it a lot. Great first piece for the site. It's difficult to make an object as mundane as a bridge carry an interesting — and more importantly, thematic — story, but you managed it wonderfully. It reminds me a bit of the River Canon stories in the best way: using a static geographic feature as a vehicle to explore the changing of its surroundings and people. The only criticism I do have is that it feels like the pacing after the 'gap' is a bit wonky — you pivot away from bitterness very quickly, jarringly so. Maybe expand it out, add another short paragraph, let the attitude change breathe a bit more before you return to hopeful neutrality. Other than that, good stuff.

This is really fantastic, the steady flow into first person is super well done and effective, and the phrase "Just a bridge" being such a strong through-line makes this feel like a fully complete piece. It almost makes me think that when you got your image you thought, "That's just a bridge," and lightbulbs started going off lmao. Awesome job

Bouncing off what Snap was saying, the thought process behind this piece is very transparent. You can almost watch as the author's proverbial gears start turning. Very, very cool!
