In honor of Huehuecoyotl, and of those lost to the desert

A coyote is many things. The species canis latrans. A trickster god known by the Mexica and the Mixtec all the way to the Navajo and the Yana. A storyteller. A person who smuggles migrants through the US-México border.

All these concepts come together in this story, a story with which I am all too familiar through the experiences of my people.

The word “tecolote” refers to the Mexican spotted owl (Strix occidentalis lucida), thought in Mesoamerican mythology to be emissaries of the underworld, the eyes of Death.

Do I even need to tell you it's good? I love these bifurcated works. I think it's really darn cool, and I would steal it from you if I knew any other language than Latin. Damn cool, love the themes of this. Mythicizing the mundane is something I've always loved that you do, and this feels deep and psychological.

This is lovely! The bilingual…ism? of the story(ies you write, in general) really adds to it another whole layer - even though it's the same text. Something something untranslatable subtext and associations. And weaving together mythology and real-life experiences, I feel not only grounds those myths - but adds even more to the emotional impact. Coyote's character was really well-crafted, I feel - really shone through in the actions and dialogue.

The goal of the site is often wonder, the sense that there is more out there than meets the eye. This is often taken as fantastical, wonderful. That's not bad at all, there are plenty of stories that engage with that interpretation of the concept that are really good, and I'm sure there will be plenty more. However, what I don't often see here is something like this, where magic and the divine suffer alongside us. Of course they would face the same hardship as the common man would. I love Coyote's character here, it's somber and mysterious, you really feel his age, along with his determination. A really good one from you, Din, definitely deserves more reads
