This contest ruled!! I liked it so much that I came up with a prompt for every possible combination in the contest. This one was the one I finally decided to write.

Heat X Construct:

In Ancient Greece, Hephaestus forges the metal giant Talos to guard a princess. In 20th Century America, Ray Harryhausen creates models of Talos for the stop motion film Jason and the Argonauts.

Many of Ray Harryhausen's films are important to me, but none more so than Jason and the Argonauts. If it's not clear, the last paragraph here is me! I have a deep appreciation for this man and getting to see his work in person at an exhibition last year had a big impact on me.

If some of the stuff here doesn't make sense, go watch a few scenes from Jason and the Argonauts featuring Talos, then watch videos explaining how the effects were achieved.

This post radiates warmth. It is warmth like you described, not painful, not burning. A memory of things past. This heartfelt tribute to myth and man alike left me with a smile on my face when it was done. It was brief, but it said what it needed to say. Well done as always, Sobek. Keep up the good work.

I love the relationship between the two perspectives. The way art and the passion of creating echo across generational gaps and even centuries is perfect; I can really feel the appreciation and wonder of it. This is lovely, Sobek.

really beautiful. the context and interplay between all the elements of this narrative — ancient greek mythology, mid-century filmmaking, and you in the modern day — weave together gorgeously. it's so heartfelt and so elevated. your language so clear and resonant. excellent stuff, i thoroughly enjoyed reading it. as an aside, im an absolute sucker for works that explore different emotional spaces like this. enthusiastic +1 and i have to read more of your stuff.

I'll be honest, I was worried this piece was going to capture me. Something about the first section's language feels off to me, like the sentences stop and start really abruptly, but I'm pleased to say that the rest of it really enchanted me. I am completely unfamiliar with Ray Harryhausen, but something about the way you wrote him I instantly knew that he must be a real person. I loved that fact, and Hephaestus interacting with the real, the mythical acknowledging the filmmaker, and your bold dedication to take me out of the reading at the end with your own words all combined to create a lovely piece unlike anything else on this site

This is pretty good! I don't have a ton to say on it — it didn't change my life but it was a perfectly readable little jaunt. The interplay of myth and mundanity is fun and interesting, and the voice you write both aspects of it in is really strong, really what carries the piece as a whole. It comes in, explores some interesting thoughts and emotions, and doesn't outstay its welcome.

I really liked this one. I've watched Jason and the Argonauts before, so it was pleasant to just see a real life person amidst the many characters of this contest. Even more pleasant to see the passion that is clearly dripping off this piece; I can't say I was enraptured when I watched the film, but I can completely understand the love that inspired this. There's something so charming about the way the skeletons and the hydra, and yes, Talos, moved. This rigid yet vibrant style… Anyhow, I'm getting a tad off topic. This was a beautiful piece, making me remember a film I don't often think about, and allowing me to admire it from another perspective, so for that, I thank you.
