Took me far too long to actually read this. I am absolutely shocked that you decided to actually invest time in creating some words for the world to feel much more alive. Brave of you, actually; haven't much seen this used before sans a few instances in some of my earlier pieces on site. I might have to consult with you before I write a piece for what I hope will be the next River Canon: enduring by sheer force of will of those who want to see it become a tangible project. Well-earned +1.

+1 I like your prose and the sensory details of the setting. Also bird people.

Some sentences, like this, "Mudcrab, paddle-limbs flapping madly as though it could flee to the sky." are perfect. In other places, I wished there were maybe 5% fewer adjectives.

The flashbacks are so vivid— I think using a different visual or prose cue would make them easier to read. Personally, I really dislike italics used for anything but brief emphasis.
