the landscape unfolds, is given a third
dimension like a pop-up picture book,
reveals to you the flickering of a
dim fluorescent light, the hovering of
pale mist around a tombstone, the shaking
of hands pressed into bowed faces. child, the
world will be hard and narrow to you
now, a jagged pinnacle surrounded
on all sides by crashing waves that stretch out
endlessly into the distance. they will not
know how to explain it to you, how to
shape the thin film on the surface of their
eyes into words, and if they could, you would
not understand. it will only be when
you stand taller, when you have learned to go
on horseback through the wilderness of your
soul, that you will see the pit of darkness
and understand that a light has gone out.
