Poem for a Bar in the Shadows
rating: +3+x

There is a moment
In the shadowed corner
Where I'm sitting.
I see people dancing
Eyes darting
Arms flaring
Skirts twirling.
I realize where I am
Between beer-soaked walls.
Where I reside
In my better moments.

I'm home.

I found my dearest friends
On these hardwood floors.
I found my name and heart
Scrawled on bathroom walls.
I met the people who shaped me
On these terrible couches.
I've kissed sweet lips
Under these dim lights.

This place
Is a sanctuary.
Home doesn't count and never has
Works just a prison for my heart.
My body needed
A time
And a place
And a people
To dance with
And kiss
And love.
And you were there.
Hidden in plain sight.

You slipped me something
In that first step through
The glass door with the Wu-Tang logo.
Gave me strength
Purpose
Power.
To rip away
Dead skin.
To crack and break
Rusted chains.
You taught me
It was okay
To love in bursts
And want for nothing.
I'm enthralled
To something healthy.
For once in this
Miserable hellscape
I'm warm
Not burning.

Thank you
For your presence.
For your existence.
For your gifts.
Ill be back
Again and again
Until you crumble
Into dust.
Even then
I'll dance with the wind
Left in your place.
